Get Ready for your Taxes

by Robert Bain

Get ready for your taxes if you haven’t already filed them as that deadline of April 15th will arrive before you know it. Too many people feel that tax preparation is exhausting so they drag it out as long as they possibly can. Yet you can change your behavior as well as your perspective on how the process goes.

Keep a file to put items for your tax return in all year long. Even a large envelope can help you keep things in order. Put in receipts for donations and other items so you know where they are at the end of the year. It also prevents you from forgetting about things you can use as a deduction on your return.

There are plenty of deductions you can legally take so make sure you do. Knowing which ones you will be eligible for can take some reading though. The IRS works hard to keep all of this information as straight forward as possible. Take all of the small deductions that you are entitled to. This just might result in you falling into a lower tax bracket and increasing the amount of your return.

Don’t wait until the last minute to file your tax return either. You may get started and realize you are missing something. Preparing the return early gives you adequate time to collect what you may be missing. If you are pressing the deadline you may find you can’t get the information you need in the little bit of time you have left.

You can complete your own tax returns using paper forms. You can also use a software program that walks you through the process. If you don’t fee confident you can take your information to a tax preparer. They have trained professionals that can handle any type of tax situation.

Before you begin working on it though you need to verify all the information. Incorrect amounts on your information from the employer or other reporting agency can really affect your tax return. Mistakes have been known to be found so be on the look out for them. You should be tracking your own income as well so you can report anything you don’t get written verification for.

The ultimate end of filing a tax return though is discovering if you owe money or if you get some back. Paying the IRS isn’t something you will enjoy but it is better than them coming after you for it with stiff penalties attached. If you can’t pay it in full you need to work with them instead of avoiding them.

If you get a refund use it wisely. Try to apply it to various types of debt you have. Too many people frivolously spend their tax refund when their finances aren’t in the best of shape. If you plan ahead, you are honest with the information you report, and you stay on top of things filing your taxes will no longer be stressful.
