My Buddy Dave, a Beautiful Island, Lawnkeepers, and the Economy

My wife Susie recently had a week off from her job. Being an online marketer gave me the latitude to take some time off with her while still keeping up with my business. That’s certainly one of the advantages of having an online business.

One of our favorite things to do is walk on the beach at sunrise. The fact that we live less than a mile from the ocean gives us an opportunity to take our beach walks every weekend throughout the year if we choose. Working a home based business means that we can do this more often when Susie is off from work.

The last Friday of vacation was errand day. We had to pick up chlorine for the pool, visit our favorite novelty shops, and make a couple of other stops. We went to the beach first and then headed went to do the errands. When we arrived at the pool supply store we were about a half hour early so we decided to take a short drive. We decided to drive north on U.S. 1 to the next small town and then back down A1A. The drive up would take us through some beautiful natural preserve and the drive back would go through one of a very beautiful and very affluent community.

Being a little hungry we stopped at a filling station/convenience store to pick up a snack. The cashier was my buddy Dave. Dave was in the mortgage business as an Account Rep for a major mortgage lender. I used to meet with Dave a couple or three times each month to discuss what I could do to send more business his way. Dave’s great and always knew a lot about the mortgage business. When I saw him, or should I say when he saw me, he explained how he had to get a job to make ends meet. I felt bad for Dave but I knew he was doing what he had to do to get by.

Susie and I grabbed our goodies and headed to A1A and the “Beautiful Island”. As we headed south on A1A, my emotions were churning. First seeing Dave, now driving through one of the most prestigious communities in the country. The drive is so beautiful, right along the ocean and all of the mansions, and their lawns are so impeccably kept, its like a residential Disney. Names like Tiger and Celine and “The Shark” own homes along this row, it oozes wealth at every turn.

Then there are the people who keep it looking so immaculate, the lawn keepers. I was thinking at the time, wonder how long some of them have been in this country? What is it like for them to be working in this beautiful community? How do they feel just to be able to live in this country?

We stopped at the pool supply store, picked up the chlorine, and went on to the novelty store. We were about ten minutes early for the novelty store so we went next door to the charity thrift store. I happened to be near the television section of the store when an announcer broke in on the “Today Show” with breaking news. It was president Bush asking congress to pass the $700,000,000,000.00 bailout package as quickly as possible. We went to the novelty store to pick up some trinkets to remember Susie’s vacation by, then headed home.

I thought about that Friday for a long time, and still do from time to time. I think about the people who live on the “Beautiful Island” and how untouched they are by today’s economic crisis. I also think about the lawn keepers and how untouched they are. An then I think about my buddy Dave, and all of those like him who are in the “middle” who have been so dramatically affected. Many people whose lives have completely changed, whose dreams have been forgotten, whose futures are unclear.

My other thoughts are these; first, have you seen this coming and if so for how long? And second, what steps are you taking to secure your and your loved ones financial future?
